April 19
Acoustic Muse Concerts presents American Folk Music Legend TOM PAXTON April 19, 8pm, Aeolian Hall, 795 Dundas St., London. Tickets are available now at Aeolian Box Office 519-672-7950, or Centennial Hall Box Office (519-672-1967), Chapters North (Masonville), Grooves (353 Clarence), The Village Idiot (Wortley Village) Tom Paxton has become a voice of his generation, addressing issues of injustice & inhumanity, laying bare the absurdities of modern culture and celebrating the tenderest bonds of family, friends, & community. In his more than 40 year career, he has performed in countries such as Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Hong Kong, Scandinavia, France, Italy, Belgium, Holland, England, Scotland, Ireland and Canada. That these fans still enjoy his work is a testament to the quality of his recent work, and to the enduring power of modern standards like The Last Thing On My Mind, Ramblin' Boy, Bottle Of Wine, Whose Garden Was This?, Goin' To The Zoo and The Marvelous Toy. Paxton has been an integral part of the songwriting and folk music community since the early 60's Greenwich Village scene, and continues to be a primary influence on today's "New Folk" performers. Tom received a 2009 Lifetime Achievement Award from the Recording Academy during the 51st Annual GRAMMY® Awards. He was nominated for a GRAMMY for Comedians and Angels in 2007, and Live in the U.K. in 2006. He was also nominated for GRAMMYS in 2003 for his Appleseed Records CD, Looking For The Moon, and in 2002 for his children's CD, Your Shoes, My Shoes. He has received the Lifetime Achievement Award from ASCAP, and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the BBC in London. Tom Paxton's place in folk music is secured not just by hit records and awards, but by the admiration of 3 generations of fellow musicians. An internationally recognized and loved cultural figure, he has always chosen goodwill over commercial success. His generosity has taken the shape of a benefit concert performance for a little girl fighting leukemia, or a personal note of encouragement to an up-and coming songwriter.
This is the man who wrote and lives the words, "Peace will come, and let it begin with me".

Nunsense II - The Second Coming June 15-17, 19-24
By Don Gaggin. The Musical takes place 6 weeks after the Sisters have staged their first benefit. They have been bitten by the theatre "bug" and wish to present a "thank you" show to supporters. Of course, chaos soon erupts. Apparently, a talent scout is in the audience and the Nuns are determined to out do each other on stage. The riotous bingo game run by Sister Amnesia, the clever songs and the hilarious Nuns will leave the audiences rolling in the aisles. Laughter is the best kind of medicine for whatever ails you.

TOWNSHIP OF ZORRA WALL OF RECOGNITION EVENT
Richard G.B. Kosmal 1925-2010
Born in Warka Poland 1925, Richard lost both of his parents at a young age & most of his relatives in World War II. He escaped to Germany, studied medicine & performed a variety of jobs to sustain himself. He immigrated to Canada In 1951 with a small suitcase & $10. Mastering all the exams & internships required to practice medicine In Canada, his first place of employment as a doctor was Winisk, on Hudson Bay. He helped Indians & the Canadian army live in this bitterly harsh environment. At Winisk he met the author Vita Rordam & was featured in her book. 'Winisk: A Cree Indian Settlement on Hudson Bay". From Winisk he took an interim job as the doctor for the Hamilton Red Wings hockey team (a Detroit Red Wings minor league affiliate) & later returned to Europe. However, after a brief period, he decided that Canada was to be his home. In Collingwood General & Marine Hospital he met Marion, a kind, lovely woman & they soon married. As the Thamesford area grew large enough to sustain a full time medical practice he relocated here. Their children Tanya, Nicolas and Michelle were raised in the family home on the 15th Line. The Dr. was an avid hunter and lover of dogs.
Hunting trips locally and to Western Canada were shared with friends. In 1989 Dr. Kosmal "retired” from his medical practice but he still served a small number of patients from his home. In 1991 Marlon lost her battle with cancer and several years later Richard married a wonderful & compassionate woman, Lois.
Richard practiced medicine well into his 80's until his passing in 2010. A kind hearted man with a keen wit & strong survival
instincts, he is dearly missed by many. In 2011 the Dr Kosmal Park (at the corner of 119 & 2) was dedicated in Thamesford.

THAMESFORD LEGION

THAMESFORD LIONS CLUB
Thamesford Lions President Bob Young, the Executive & Club members wish to extend their thanks to the residents of Thamesford & area for their generous response to this years Kettle Campaign. Thank you to the churches (Westminster United & St. John's Anglican), the schools (Thamesford Public School & St. Joe’s), area businesses - especially Tim Horton’s, Thamesford RBC & Tokyo Joe’s, Thamesford Firemen & the arena staff for their efforts. A special thanks to those whose cheques and financial donations were a big help. To the Lions & others who drove truck loads of food to Ingersoll & then brought the baskets back for distribution in the Thamesford area.
The Thamesford churches now have recognition on the Ingersoll & District Inter-Church Christmas Committee (representatives are Kate Lockhart & Leslie Wright). Thamesford Lions will continue to hold a significant place in the area Christmas campaigns in future years.
This has been a tough year for a number of area family's, but Thamesford has responded to help these families have a Happy Christmas. The Lions wish all a Happy, Healthy & Prosperous 2012.
Family Day activities including skating & hayrides will be held again this year on Monday Feb 20 at the arena. Come out and join in the fun. If the weather cooperates there will be a snow sculpture contest so start thinking creatively. See elsewhere in the VV for the details. The February bottle collection will be held on Saturday Feb 4 at Macs Milk. Come & donate your empties. Money collected all goes to support community activities. If you have bottles you would like to donate but have difficulty getting them to us on those days, call Lion Burton Smith at 519 285-5485 & we will arrange to pick them up. The February Bingo Night will be on Thurs Feb 23, 7pm at the library. Come enjoy a night of fun & excitement. We now offer cash prizes.
The Lions have been busy as of this writing delivering food hampers before Christmas, participating in the Christmas parade and collecting Christmas trees early in January. Lion Gord would like to thank the anonymous person or persons who designated their tree to him. At least the rest of the club appreciated it. At the January dinner meeting we had a presentation from the Canadian Anti Fraud Centre on the various frauds being perpetrated online and identity theft scenarios. Planning is now underway for the Ham Hassle event April 5th and Calithumpian.
Anyone interested in joining the Lions Club should contact Lion Jack Broadfoot. The camaraderie is excellent and it is a great opportunity to give back to the community.

TRAIL FOR ALL SEASONS!
Trails are a year round recreation opportunity & what better time to take of advantage of this opportunity than in the winter. There are no pesky bugs, it is not hot and the trails generally have some shelter from the wind. Each season offers its own beauty, resident birds and always a sense of tranquility.
The Oxford County Trails Council and its member organizations are moving forward with trail development.
June 2011 saw the official opening of the first 2 km of the Oxford Thames River Trail, Beachville. The Trails Council is slowly moving ahead, towards the goal of linking Woodstock to Ingersoll and beyond.
This special area along the banks of the Thames River, nestled between 2 railway lines, is ideal for hiking, cross-country skiing, and bird watching. The Upper Thames River Conservation Authority has embarked on its plan to plant 1880 native trees & shrubs and 5 acres of tall-grass prairie. Approximately 0.5 acres of wetland habitat will be improved through the planting of a treed buffer, 1000 aquatic plants & wetland seed, & 10 nest boxes will be installed. An ideal winter project
is to explore each of the trails in the county. You will find that each trail has a different look & feel in the winter. Woodstock has an extensive trail network along Pittock Lake & the Thames River. The silence always seems more intense while walking along the shores of a frozen lake, or more subdued as the river flows under snowy banks.
The Thomas Ingersoll Trail winds through to the centre of the town. First, you can experience the past in the Ingersoll Cheese Museum. Then follow the trail to downtown where you can stop in one of the restaurants for a cup of coffee or hot chocolate. Tillsonburg has trails from north to south and east to west. The trans-Canada trail is one tiny segment of 16,500 kilometers of connected trail, coast to coast. The trail is about 6000 km away from being fully connected. Tillsonburg is proud that it has been able to contribute its section. A unique partnership between the town and the golf course added another 5 km of trail to the existing trail system. For more information on the Oxford County Trails Council and how you can support our trails see: www.oxfordcountytrailscouncil.ca.
Copies of the trail guides can be picked up at local libraries. Contact: Lorna, 519-539-9800 ext 3411.

VON OXFORD NEEDS VOLUNTEERS
VON NEWS - HOME AT LAST – “HAL”
One of VON’s community support programs is “Home At Last” or HAL. HAL is a free program that identifies adults in local hospitals who are over 55 and are aging, frail or have special needs and require assistance to get home and settle-in following a hospital discharge. These clients could be living at home, at a retirement or long term care home, and have limited supports or a caregiver or family that is unavailable. The HAL program works with community partners to provide the various services that make up the HAL program ensuring a smooth transition from hospital to home. On a predetermined discharge day, a HAL attendant will meet the client at the hospital, escort them home and if required, assist with medical equipment, ,prescription and/or grocery pick up. They will ensure the client is settled safely and comfortably in their home. Our HAL program also includes a complimentary Meals on Wheels lunch and follows up calls from HAL staff. There is no fee for this HAL service as it is funded through the Southwest LHIN Aging at Home initiative. For more info,
contact Connie Milliken or Darlene Dooks at VON at 519-659-2273 or speak to your hospital CCAC Case Manager. HAL-Taking the Alone out of Going Home

COUNCIL NEWS BY GORDON MACKAY
Zorra has renewed a Waste Management agreement with the County and is watching closely a pilot program initiative to Recycle Farm Plastic. This is supported by ministry of Agriculture & Food through the CleanFARMS program. I will update as info becomes available.
Zorra has renewed our fire dispatch service with the Woodstock Police Services Board for another year. Paul Mitchell has been appointed as the temporary Acting Fire Chief in accordance with the Fire Marshal’s office until we assess our needs and find a permanent solution.
The township will place Memorial Tree Plaques in Grace Patterson Park (Thamesford), Embro Pond & Harrington Conservation Area to recognize names & dates of memorial tree donations in the township.
Council will soon be tackling a very difficult budget process as the last debenture for the Embro Sewer Project will be added into the mix along with all the other increased costs.
Have a safe winter season. Remember if you see snow GO SLOW.
Yours Sincerely, Gordon MacKay
Council News from Jim Verwer
Council News from MARIE KEASEY
Ground Hog Day, Valentine’s Day, Family Day, Retirement Open House to honour Fire Chief Cairns, RRSP season–a busy month ahead.
Council has had a number of delegations before it in late December and January. Council referred the Off-Leash Dog Park proposal to ZRAC (Zorra Recreation Advisory Committee) and it will have been considered at their January meeting. The Calithumpian Committee requested support for a new fundraiser: a demolition derby as well as confirming its community festival status and a beer tent as it did last year. Council supported these initiatives providing they meet criteria
required by the fire department, police, etc. Weinerfest presented as well and noted that they have been recognized by Tourism Ontario and a video will be done which will showcase Thamesford and area. They asked for support from the Township for traffic barricades and use of the Township’s dumpsters. Upper Thames Regional Conservation Authority (UTRCA) made a presentation and noted that although it is the 6th largest in Ontario, it is 27th out of 36, in the amount of funding it gets. Their responsibilities now include drinking water. One of the major concerns for funding in Zorra are the dams at Embro and Harrington. There will be a meeting in February to hear more about this issue.
Representatives of the Aggregate Forum of Ontario also made a presentation to Council. They are a group of nonprofits
and businesses working on voluntary certification: the process & standards with a mutual goal of better protection of the environment & reduced conflict with communities. They are working on identifying best practices with respect to water management, truck traffic, cumulative impact, & noise. They are looking for a pilot project to participate in the bench marking process.
Council appointed Paul Mitchell, from the Uniondale Fire Department, to be Acting Fire Chief for the Township.
Council approved the Streetlight Replacement Program which will see a switch to LED lighting in the Township.
A delegation from Alexandra Hospital talked about various partnerships, the need for more family physicians, the new nurse practitioner clinic opening in Ingersoll & stated that having a doctor in Thamesford has helped to reduce the numbers who do not have a family physician. If you wish to see the presentation, or any others that delegations make, go to the Zorra Website and click Agendas. All documents considered by Council or presented to Council are posted in the Agendas (www.zorra.on.ca).
Council also heard from a delegation to start dreaming/planning/investigating an improved district recreation complex. This exciting presentation including possibilities for increased fitness opportunities, professional offices, meeting rooms, etc. Council supported the delegation’s request to hold 2-3 community meetings to see if there is any interest in moving forward on this dream. It is said that a voyage starts with a single step, and this is the single step. Many thanks to Tony Redix and Beth O’Bright for bringing this to Council. I would encourage anyone who has ideas or proposals for Thamesford and/or the Township to consider being a delegation to Council. It is your Council & the meetings, while having some formality, are open & hopefully welcoming to presentations. To be scheduled, call or email Lisa Teeple or Karen Graham at the Township Office, no later than the Wednesday before the scheduled Council Meeting to be assigned a time for presenting to Council. New tables (lighter ones) have been purchased for the Beaty Room and the older ones will be moved to the Arena. About 1/2 needed were purchased at the end of 2011, the rest will be purchased in 2012. This will assist in the set up of the room.
I have had a few questions about what services are available from VON, CCAC and Red Cross in Thamesford and the rural areas. The Winter Zorra Now had an article from VON about their services. There is no Meals on Wheels program in Thamesford or the rural area, but VON does do frozen meals, as does the Ingersoll Seniors Centre. VON also provides a light housekeeping service at $16 per hour and this can include meal preparation & errands. They also have a volunteer
visiting program. Call VON directly at 1-888-641-5197 for more information. Red Cross can also provide private services and they can be reached at 1-866-213-3388. For any services, calling CCAC (Community Care Access Centre) 1st can help you get to the right organization for your needs. Their number is 1-877-505-5698.
Thanks to the Lions for picking up the Christmas Trees and to the Township for chipping them.
Hope to see you at the Open House to honour now retired Fire Chief Bill Cairns on Feb 25th, 2-4pm in the Beaty Room and/or at the Family Day Events at the Arena on February 20th.
Respectfully, Marie Keasey

KINTORE KOFFEE HOUSE

1st Thursday of each Month
Something has been brewing in Kintore for awhile now and I think it is time we spilled the beans! Kintore Koffee House is held every 1st Thursday of the month. We meet at 7pm, drink coffee or tea, chat, listen to music, sing, hear piano solos, duets, poetic readings & much, much more! The evening is emceed by Doug Peck the minister at Chalmers United Church, and the entertainment is provided by local folks like you! This has been a well kept secret that needs sharing for
sure. The evening is open to everyone & you do not have to perform.
Just come, relax & visit with others. If you have a desire to perform, simply put your name on the list and enjoy yourself. Koffee House has been a regular fixture on the schedule for about a year now, and the idea sprang forth from an early morning alternative church service where folks were asked to think of ways to involve others in the weekly and monthly events at the church.
Along with the Koffee House came another great idea, which we will share with you next month… Let’s just say that we have knit together a finely woven line up for you to enjoy. If you want more information on these events you can check us out on Facebook, call the church or better yet drop in to Koffee House on Thursday February 2 at 7pm.
